'Godna' means tattoo. Gond tribe in Chhattisgarh made godna tattoo on various stages of life, depicting health, family, ancestor's blessing, life-changing events and personality traits. Colors used were made from natural ingredients and the needle was used to make tattoos. It was like a status symbol for them, more tattoos meant greater prosperity. With time tattoo art became less prevalent and now these designs are made by Gond trial women on handloom and frames.
